Nurturing Your Piercing: Essential Aftercare Guidelines

Cleaning Instructions

Now that you've got your dream piercing, it's time to learn how to care for it properly. Following the right aftercare routine is key to ensuring your piercing heals quickly and smoothly.

Keep your new piercing clean until it's completely healed, which may take a few months depending on where it's located and your body's healing process. Use a presoaked saline wipe (you can find them here) or a sterile saline spray on sterile gauze to gently clean the area for five minutes, twice a day—once in the morning and once in the evening. Avoid overdoing it; twice daily is enough. Remember, moisture can breed bacteria, so be sure to thoroughly dry the area using sterile gauze.

Aftercare Tips

  • Before cleaning your piercing, ensure your hands are thoroughly washed to avoid transferring bacteria to the open wound.

  • Keep your jewelry in place during the healing process to prevent immediate closure of the piercing.

  • Avoid using chemicals like alcohol, Neosporin, or Bactine for cleaning, as they may cause irritation.

  • Refrain from turning or rotating your jewelry to prevent irritation or damage to the healing tissue.

  • Avoid applying body creams, makeup, moisturizers, or perfumes directly on the piercing.

  • During showers, keep soaps and shampoos away from the pierced area and rinse thoroughly afterward.

  • Do not pick or pull on dried matter, as it is attached to the healing tissue.

  • Handle your new piercing with care, especially during activities like washing and styling your hair, changing clothes, and while sleeping.

  • Avoid sleeping on your piercing, and consider using a travel pillow to suspend your ear in the center opening for added comfort and support while sleeping.
